NUT SAFE SCHOOLS: A letter was sent to all DES families co-signed by our superintendent, Dr. Regina Nash, and me regarding a plan to make all of the schools in our district "Nut Safe". Severalstudents in Deerfield Elementary School suffer from severe nut allergies. Ingesting or coming into contact with peanuts, tree nuts, or nut products can cause these children to become seriously ill.
We must do all that we can in our schools to ensure that no nuts or nut products are on school premises. We are asking all those who enter our school, including staff, parents, visitors, and students to refrain from bringing any foods containing peanuts or tree nuts to school.
As a parent myself, I understand and appreciate the challenge of limiting children's food choices, especially when it comes to a food as popular, convenient, and readily available as peanut butter. However our most important responsibility is to protect the health and safety of our students. We need the support of all in the DES community to make Deerfield Elementary School a safe environment for all of our students.
